Welcome to destined for success. I'm your
Jennifer Takagi:host Jennifer Takagi and today I want to switch directions a
Jennifer Takagi:little bit based on the conversation we had last week
Jennifer Takagi:with Jim, I'm not gonna say right hones check, and he
Jennifer Takagi:developed an app called Ultimate business growth. And you can get
Jennifer Takagi:the app in the Google Store, the whatever the iPhone store is
Jennifer Takagi:called App Store. And I've kind of struggled with business
Jennifer Takagi:growth over the years, because I was offering what somebody else
Jennifer Takagi:suggested that I do or sell or how I be how I show up in the
Jennifer Takagi:world. So I want to talk first about, as I fall out of my chair
Jennifer Takagi:here, I want to talk about the bell curve of tech adaptation.
Jennifer Takagi:Now, to be clear, and to throw in a little caveat, in full
Jennifer Takagi:transparency, I didn't research this, like, where did this first
Jennifer Takagi:come from? Where did these terms first come from? But when I
Jennifer Takagi:Googled it, the first thing that came up was this bell curve. And
Jennifer Takagi:this terminology is tied to the technology adaptation. So when
Jennifer Takagi:does someone adopt a certain technology? And the cont the
Jennifer Takagi:terms, that's what I want to use the labels the terms. You start
Jennifer Takagi:out with tech enthusiast, and those are the innovators. And
Jennifer Takagi:they're like, first there, they're like, We need this, I'm
Jennifer Takagi:going to help create it. Then you have the visionaries that
Jennifer Takagi:are the early adopters. And that's like 13.5% of the
Jennifer Takagi:population. These early adopters are the ones when they hear a
Jennifer Takagi:new piece of technology comes out. They are up all night
Jennifer Takagi:standing in line waving. Back when we had to go someplace to
Jennifer Takagi:get things we couldn't just order them online. They were
Jennifer Takagi:just waiting to click the button. Then you have the
Jennifer Takagi:pragmatists are like, ooh, do I want it? Do I not they are the
Jennifer Takagi:early majority, again, about 34% of the population. And they're
Jennifer Takagi:like, Yeah, I want it but I want to wait just a tiny bit and see,
Jennifer Takagi:like who else gets it, what happens? Then you have the
Jennifer Takagi:conservatives, and they're also called Late Majority. 34% of the
Jennifer Takagi:population is equal with the pragmatist is like, well, I want
Jennifer Takagi:to see even more people get it before I do. And then you've got
Jennifer Takagi:the skeptics. And I love this term, the skeptics are the
Jennifer Takagi:laggards. And that's like 16%. So we've got the, the latest of
Jennifer Takagi:the late showing up to the party, and sometimes they show
Jennifer Takagi:up to the party, when there is no option. So where do you fall
Jennifer Takagi:on this bell curve? So the question that comes to mind for
Jennifer Takagi:me is when did you buy an iPhone? Or did you ever? So I
Jennifer Takagi:decided when I got my Well, first I got a phone in the very
Jennifer Takagi:first place. They were flip phones back in the day. And the
Jennifer Takagi:reason I got one is my cousin was in the hospital. And it was
Jennifer Takagi:life threatening. And I needed to be able to get ahold of
Jennifer Takagi:people and have people be able to get hold of me. So I called
Jennifer Takagi:my husband, and I was at work and I said, Hey, I need you to
Jennifer Takagi:go get me a phone, and then meet me at the hospital. And what I
Jennifer Takagi:wanted and did not communicate was I wanted him to go to the
Jennifer Takagi:phone store and grab me a phone, buy me a phone, give me a number
Jennifer Takagi:and bring it to me. And he met me outside the hospital and
Jennifer Takagi:handed me his phone. And I said, Well, what do I want to do with
Jennifer Takagi:this? And he goes, Well, you said you needed a phone? And I
Jennifer Takagi:said yeah, but I wanted to. I wanted you to go get me a phone
Jennifer Takagi:and he goes, Well, here's a phone. So yes, now I have a
Jennifer Takagi:phone, but now I can't get ahold of my husband. I have his phone.
Jennifer Takagi:So the next day, I went into the phone store and I got a phone.
Jennifer Takagi:And it was fine. It was a flip phone. It did what I needed to
Jennifer Takagi:do. But I couldn't text. I could not I could not text it was
Jennifer Takagi:basically I didn't want to text just call me. I just call me if
Jennifer Takagi:you want to tell me something, don't text me. And I remember,
Jennifer Takagi:fast forward a little bit. My dad was in the hospital and my
Jennifer Takagi:girlfriend texted me. And it took me like 10 minutes to text
Jennifer Takagi:her back. Just call me when you can talk because I wasn't gonna
Jennifer Takagi:text with her. And then my husband was nice enough to go
Jennifer Takagi:get me a film that was a slide. It was a slide phone and you
Jennifer Takagi:slit it up and then you had a keyboard and you can actually
Jennifer Takagi:type on the keyboard and then we moved into it. needing wanting
Jennifer Takagi:or desiring whatever, a touchscreen smartphone. So when
Jennifer Takagi:I went in to get my smartphone, I was adamant I did not want an
Jennifer Takagi:iPhone. And you might be saying, why would you want an iPhone?
Jennifer Takagi:Jennifer? Well, that's just a really great question. And I
Jennifer Takagi:didn't want to iPhone, because by that time the iPhones got to
Jennifer Takagi:have different cords than everybody else. And I thought
Jennifer Takagi:that was stupid. Like they should have the same cord as
Jennifer Takagi:everybody else, the same plug. But that's not how it worked.
Jennifer Takagi:That was not how it worked at all. So I didn't want one. And I
Jennifer Takagi:didn't get one. And I went through multiple phones. And my
Jennifer Takagi:last phone, I won't slam a brand. I'm sure they've made it
Jennifer Takagi:better. But I went to Paris, I was fortunate enough to go to
Jennifer Takagi:Paris with several of my girlfriends. And it was one of
Jennifer Takagi:my girlfriend's birthday, we literally were at the top of the
Jennifer Takagi:Eiffel Tower drinking champagne on her birthday, and it was so
Jennifer Takagi:much fun. And side story, they said they had a champagne bar.
Jennifer Takagi:He was the champagne window. It was a window and you went up and
Jennifer Takagi:you paid this guy and he handed you a plastic glasses of
Jennifer Takagi:champagne. I thought it was gonna be a bar. Like we could
Jennifer Takagi:sit in a bar and order glasses of champagne overlooking Paris.
Jennifer Takagi:But that's not how it works. It was still amazing, though, by
Jennifer Takagi:the way. So we're in Paris. I've been having trouble with my
Jennifer Takagi:phone. My girlfriend only has a work phone that has minimal
Jennifer Takagi:things on it like Uber is not on her work phone. So we're using
Jennifer Takagi:my phone but it won't hold a charge. It's our last day in
Jennifer Takagi:Paris. We are taking a train out to a hotel way far away, so that
Jennifer Takagi:we can be closer to the airport and have a shuttle to the
Jennifer Takagi:airport the next morning because our flights are very early. So
Jennifer Takagi:we're on the train. We're almost to the station literally in the
Jennifer Takagi:middle of nowhere, tiny little village and I go on Uber and I
Jennifer Takagi:asked for a car. And I immediately put my phone on
Jennifer Takagi:airplane mode after I asked for the car because I didn't want
Jennifer Takagi:the battery to die like it is die. It won't last all day. It's
Jennifer Takagi:been on airplane mode all day. So we step out of the train
Jennifer Takagi:station. Everybody scatters because they know where they're
Jennifer Takagi:going. They know where where they're going. And about the
Jennifer Takagi:time I hit the button to turn it off airplane mode it comes back
Jennifer Takagi:on. And I opened the car door that drives up and he says Ginny
Jennifer Takagi:fail and I was like we said wha and we jump in the car and he
Jennifer Takagi:takes us to the hotel. I have my phone plugged in all night. The
Jennifer Takagi:next morning, I get on the shuttle bus to go to the
Jennifer Takagi:airport. I get to the airport. I fly to the US I don't have my
Jennifer Takagi:phone on the whole time. Right it's on airplane mode the whole
Jennifer Takagi:way because an airplane. I land in Detroit I get through
Jennifer Takagi:customs. Another side note Detroit customs rocks. That is
Jennifer Takagi:the fastest bestest customs place I've ever been flying
Jennifer Takagi:internationally to are from. So I fly into Detroit. I get
Jennifer Takagi:through customs easily. They have a Chili's. I love Chili's.
Jennifer Takagi:And I love their chips and salsa. I haven't had chips and
Jennifer Takagi:salsa and weeks order a beer and chips and salsa. I'm all happy I
Jennifer Takagi:call my husband. I said I'm back in the US my flights in two
Jennifer Takagi:hours is a two hour flight home. I'll call you when I get to
Jennifer Takagi:Columbus city. Okay. I hang up. I eat my chips and salsa. I go
Jennifer Takagi:to the gate. And they have a charging stand. I grab it. I
Jennifer Takagi:plug my Android film in. And I'm reading a book I'm a big Kindle
Jennifer Takagi:fan, avid reader. I'm reading I'm happy. And my phone will
Jennifer Takagi:kind of like Blink beeps a little bit every now and then.
Jennifer Takagi:And when I look at it, it says something like, system can't
Jennifer Takagi:optimize or whatever it was that it said. And I was like, Man,
Jennifer Takagi:that's really weird. Okay. So I get off the plane in Oklahoma
Jennifer Takagi:City. My girlfriend I'm supposed to drive her home. Because she
Jennifer Takagi:doesn't have her personal phone. She only has her work phone and
Jennifer Takagi:she's not blah, blah blah, whatever. But I'm going to take
Jennifer Takagi:her home we've already decided this in Paris. I'll drive her
Jennifer Takagi:home and our plan our flights, different airlines flying into
Jennifer Takagi:different cities we land 10 minutes apart or something. So
Jennifer Takagi:I'm at baggage claim and she comes up and she goes I'm in
Jennifer Takagi:texting you Why are you replying? And I said my phone is
Jennifer Takagi:dead, like D AD dead. And I take her home and I pass See a phone
Jennifer Takagi:store on the way to her house. I dropped her off.
Jennifer Takagi:I circle back I walk in. It's about 10 till seven. Well, I
Jennifer Takagi:want to research this. Now granted, I don't know really
Jennifer Takagi:much of anything about phones other than what other people
Jennifer Takagi:tell me. But I wanted to make a few calls. I wanted to find out
Jennifer Takagi:what phone to get. So I walk up, and I hold my phone up. And as a
Jennifer Takagi:young man and a young woman, I'm just gonna guess they're both
Jennifer Takagi:under 30. And I said, Hey, can you fix my phone? So that it
Jennifer Takagi:works for a couple days? So I can decide what kind of phone to
Jennifer Takagi:get. And they looked at each other. And then they looked at
Jennifer Takagi:me. And at the same time, they both said, No, that phone is
Jennifer Takagi:dead. And I went, What do you mean, the phone's dead? You can
Jennifer Takagi:get it back. And they're like, No, we can't. That's a system
Jennifer Takagi:failure error. And I went, Oh, and they said, If you want a
Jennifer Takagi:phone, you need to pick one like right now. Well, I wasn't ready
Jennifer Takagi:to pick one right now. But okay, I'll pick one right now. And I
Jennifer Takagi:was like, Okay, great. I don't want an iPhone, but you've got
Jennifer Takagi:30 seconds to tell me why I want an iPhone. And the young man
Jennifer Takagi:looks at me and he points his finger at his my phone. And he
Jennifer Takagi:doesn't in a circle, his finger kind of like you know, the
Jennifer Takagi:buffering buffering symbol. He does his finger like that. And
Jennifer Takagi:he said, an iPhone will never do that. Well, that was like the
Jennifer Takagi:clearest, most concise explanation I had ever had on
Jennifer Takagi:why I would want an iPhone and I said, I'm not paying 1000 bucks.
Jennifer Takagi:And they said, Great, we have one for 800. And I said fine.
Jennifer Takagi:And they said what color and they had University of Oklahoma
Jennifer Takagi:red. Not really, I just call it that. But it was a red phone and
Jennifer Takagi:I went great. And I want to clear case and they went great.
Jennifer Takagi:And at 704 I walk out of the store with a new iPhone with all
Jennifer Takagi:my stuff, imported all my my numbers, my contacts, my
Jennifer Takagi:everything, and it works and it had 50% Charge already. So I'm
Jennifer Takagi:gonna say I was a laggard getting in the iPhone world. I
Jennifer Takagi:didn't want one because I didn't like to plug in. Well, now that
Jennifer Takagi:I've got seven Kindles don't judge me. I have them in
Jennifer Takagi:different places and use them for different things have
Jennifer Takagi:different books on them to travel with to in case one goes
Jennifer Takagi:dead. Those plugs those little basic USB, mini USB, whatever
Jennifer Takagi:it's called, they can easily get squished and then your stuff
Jennifer Takagi:won't charge. So now I do have an iPhone and I do have an iPad.
Jennifer Takagi:Why do I have an iPad, I didn't want an iPad, I got an iPad
Jennifer Takagi:because I decorate cookies. And sometimes you have the image
Jennifer Takagi:projected onto the cookie so you can make it look beautiful. And
Jennifer Takagi:for whatever reason. Most of the cameras you get for that have to
Jennifer Takagi:have an Apple product. They wouldn't work with my Kindle,
Jennifer Takagi:they wouldn't work with my laptop, they wouldn't work with
Jennifer Takagi:anything else. I had to get an iPad. But guess what? The
Jennifer Takagi:Chargers always work. The Chargers always work. It is now
Jennifer Takagi:2024 And I've had this iPhone since 2019. And the only problem
Jennifer Takagi:I've ever had is sometimes I have too many apps and I need to
Jennifer Takagi:delete the crap I don't use but that's it. I would not listen. I
Jennifer Takagi:could not hear the people that were telling me when I first got
Jennifer Takagi:a smartphone. Why I would want an iPhone. I couldn't hear it. I
Jennifer Takagi:wasn't ready. I probably heard somebody bashing iPhone. And I
Jennifer Takagi:was like yeah, me too. I'm on that bandwagon. I didn't know
Jennifer Takagi:why am I telling you to get an iPhone? No, you need to get what
Jennifer Takagi:works for you. And that brings me like to the whole point of
Jennifer Takagi:this conversation, which is what do you really want? What do you
Jennifer Takagi:really want what do you really need when I went to get my first
Jennifer Takagi:smartphone? The young man in the store took one look at me and
Jennifer Takagi:Karina I don't look my age at all. I look way younger than my
Jennifer Takagi:actual age. But I looked older than him because he was like 22
Jennifer Takagi:and I did look older than that because I looked 30 at 22 So
Jennifer Takagi:there you go. He said something about well for people like you
Jennifer Takagi:it's us get the iPhone it's easier to use. People like me,
Jennifer Takagi:like am I like I didn't get it. If he had had a little better
Jennifer Takagi:sales tactic, I probably would have not gone through four,
Jennifer Takagi:maybe five different Android phones that all failed me
Jennifer Takagi:miserably before I went to the iPhone. I didn't have all the
Jennifer Takagi:data, I didn't have all the information. I went with what
Jennifer Takagi:somebody suggested. I said, I don't want to iPhone, he goes
Jennifer Takagi:great here, get this. And I did. And that was a disaster. That
Jennifer Takagi:phone didn't even last a year, it was so bad. You have to
Jennifer Takagi:listen to your gut. What you really want, you need to get
Jennifer Takagi:some information. Why is this better than this? What does it
Jennifer Takagi:have to offer? me on my business? What am I going to
Jennifer Takagi:offer? What do I want you to buy? How do I want you to work
Jennifer Takagi:with me? Do I want you to work with me in a group setting? Do I
Jennifer Takagi:want you to work with me one on one? Guess what? We can work
Jennifer Takagi:that out. But you have to listen to your gut on what feels good
Jennifer Takagi:and right to you. Are you a speaker? What do you want to
Jennifer Takagi:talk about? What is something that if somebody handed you a
Jennifer Takagi:mic every single day for the rest of your life? You could
Jennifer Takagi:talk about easily, effortlessly, and get this with a lot of
Jennifer Takagi:passion? What could it be? What could you talk about? Like go on
Jennifer Takagi:and on and on talking about 40,000 things about it. Listen
Jennifer Takagi:to your gut. How do you do that? Sometimes the answer just come
Jennifer Takagi:so quickly and easily. You're like, oh, yeah, I'm in and
Jennifer Takagi:that's great. If you're not in a car, if you're in a car and
Jennifer Takagi:you're at a stoplight, okay, fine. But if you're driving,
Jennifer Takagi:don't do this set up kind of straight, not stiff, just a
Jennifer Takagi:little bit straight. Relax your shoulders bounce on a timer to
Jennifer Takagi:bounce my mind. Can you hear that? My voice amounts for
Jennifer Takagi:shoulders. My name is Jennifer. So I'm going to ask the question
Jennifer Takagi:Is my name Jennifer and my body sways forward just a tiny bit is
Jennifer Takagi:my name Bill and I go back just a little bit bills my husband's
Jennifer Takagi:name, but it's not my name. And you can start practicing to
Jennifer Takagi:learn the yeses. And the knows your body will tell you. Your
Jennifer Takagi:body will tell you what's a yes. What's a No. Should I invest in
Jennifer Takagi:this? Yeah, yeah, that feels really good. I was at a event a
Jennifer Takagi:year or so ago. And an NLP practitioner led us through a
Jennifer Takagi:visualization exercise. And we were all standing up. And she
Jennifer Takagi:was like, imagine you're five years from now. And I mean, oh,
Jennifer Takagi:was so positive and optimistic. And then she was like, now
Jennifer Takagi:consider you didn't make any change at all? What would that
Jennifer Takagi:be like? And ooh, your body just felt very differently when you
Jennifer Takagi:were like, ooh, like, if everything stays the same. I'm
Jennifer Takagi:not happy with that. I don't want that I want something
Jennifer Takagi:different. And I was talking to a gal that was also at the
Jennifer Takagi:conference and a little breakout thing. And she said, our I asked
Jennifer Takagi:her, Hey, did you feel your body move during that? It's yours?
Jennifer Takagi:Yeah, I did. I thought just because our eyes were closed,
Jennifer Takagi:and we were standing that I was moving. And I said no. When she
Jennifer Takagi:talked about the future, and what the future could look like,
Jennifer Takagi:Did you lean forward? Or did you lean back? And she said, I let I
Jennifer Takagi:leaned forward to the point that I stumbled a little bit. And I
Jennifer Takagi:was like, Yeah, and when she said, What if things never
Jennifer Takagi:change? She said, I leaned back until I stumbled just a little
Jennifer Takagi:bit. And I said, that was your intuition telling you, you want
Jennifer Takagi:to lean into the future. You want to lean into the future
Jennifer Takagi:business future live, future success. And staying the same
Jennifer Takagi:feels terrible and you're backing away. It's like backing
Jennifer Takagi:away from a hot stove or you go to a bonfire and you have to
Jennifer Takagi:backup because that heats too much, right? It's not for me,
Jennifer Takagi:it's backed up a little bit. When you ask yourself what you
Jennifer Takagi:really want, give yourselves a few minutes to be quiet. To be
Jennifer Takagi:still, I don't mean 1020 3040 minutes you can if you want but
Jennifer Takagi:you don't have to take a few minutes to close your eyes. Take
Jennifer Takagi:a few deep breaths, relax, tell your body to relax. And then ask
Jennifer Takagi:yourself, Do I really want this and you will lean into it when
Jennifer Takagi:it's a yes and you'll pull back when it's if you want more
