Jennifer Takagi:

Welcome to Destin for success. I'm your

Jennifer Takagi:

host, Jennifer Takagi, and I'm so excitable because it is pot

Jennifer Takagi:

of Palooza Day, and I get to meet or re meet or find new

Jennifer Takagi:

people on this day several times a year. And I'm so excited I

Jennifer Takagi:

have Lori Osborne with me right now, and Lori and I are going to

Jennifer Takagi:

talk about showing up as an authority that you need to be.

Jennifer Takagi:

And I struggle with this, because I can be really

Jennifer Takagi:

authoritative when I do show up. It's a showing up part that I

Jennifer Takagi:

skip out on sometimes. So I'm really excited about this. Lori,

Jennifer Takagi:

like, tell me a little bit more about yourself and how you

Jennifer Takagi:

became

Lori Osbourne:

an authority on this. Oh, well, thank you.

Lori Osbourne:

Jennifer, it is such a pleasure to be here. You know, I started

Lori Osbourne:

doing this. I've been in technology for my entire career,

Lori Osbourne:

but I started building websites and looking at branding about 10

Lori Osbourne:

years ago, very short story as the result of being diagnosed

Lori Osbourne:

with a benign brain tumor that is part of my carotid artery and

Lori Osbourne:

led to surgeries that left me half blind and chronic

Lori Osbourne:

headaches. So basically, I say that story because it stopped me

Lori Osbourne:

and made me look at what I could do for the rest of my life. And

Lori Osbourne:

it was when I discovered that I really am good at what I do, and

Lori Osbourne:

I love building websites I had never done it before. And when I

Lori Osbourne:

started, I went, Oh my gosh, why have I not been doing this my

Lori Osbourne:

entire career? And the thing I always tell people is, the way I

Lori Osbourne:

know this is what I'm supposed to be doing, is when I build a

Lori Osbourne:

website, I never have a headache.

Jennifer Takagi:

Oh my gosh. And it's so funny. I said this last

Jennifer Takagi:

week with a group of friends I used to work with, and then I

Jennifer Takagi:

said it earlier today, and that someone said, Why do Are you

Jennifer Takagi:

sorry that you didn't do this sooner. And I was like, No, I

Jennifer Takagi:

wouldn't have the great stories that I have. And it's like, man,

Jennifer Takagi:

you get every time you work on a website, you get confirmation

Jennifer Takagi:

you're in the right place because you don't have a

Jennifer Takagi:

headache. Like, that's amazing.

Lori Osbourne:

It is because, I mean, honestly, I live with a

Lori Osbourne:

lot of pain the rest of the time, and I just I get so much

Lori Osbourne:

joy out of extracting someone's brand and who they're targeting

Lori Osbourne:

and then building something that truly represents them, that

Lori Osbourne:

speaks to their ideal audience. And I get to be creative and

Lori Osbourne:

analytical and technical, and I get to use all my talents to

Lori Osbourne:

draw out and and hopefully change someone's entire

Lori Osbourne:

perspective online, like that's my goal.

Jennifer Takagi:

I love that you get to be creative and very

Jennifer Takagi:

technical, very strategic, very analytical, because sometimes

Jennifer Takagi:

people think those two don't go together, but they do. It's like

Jennifer Takagi:

peanut butter and jelly. Yeah, you gotta have it's a both and

Jennifer Takagi:

not an either or. Yes, I've had websites done by very creative

Jennifer Takagi:

people, and none of the tech worked. And I had stuff done by

Jennifer Takagi:

very techy people, and it was just kind of okay, pretty but

Jennifer Takagi:

guess what? The tech didn't work. So having both and is

Jennifer Takagi:

critical. And wait, did we meet on the marketers cruise?

Lori Osbourne:

I think we did. That's it. I think that is where

Lori Osbourne:

we met. Yes, I was trying to put it together too. Yes. Are you

Lori Osbourne:

going? Are you going to the next one? I am, are you? Yes, let's

Lori Osbourne:

have, yes. Let's do,

Jennifer Takagi:

let's do, Lori, we're having cocktails. Oh, my

Jennifer Takagi:

God, awesome. So, um, branding and and your website. So I have

Jennifer Takagi:

a couple, you know, personal experiences with both and 1000s

Jennifer Takagi:

and 1000s of dollars. So I heard one time, I just want your take

Jennifer Takagi:

on this, because I don't know what I believe. And I'm not the

Jennifer Takagi:

only one about this. When it comes to your brand, you don't

Jennifer Takagi:

just like map out what you want your brand to be. How you show

Jennifer Takagi:

up determines what your brand is. Thoughts on that statement,

Lori Osbourne:

let me kind of define brand a little bit to

Lori Osbourne:

answer that. Please, first your as entrepreneurs, we are our

Lori Osbourne:

brand. I mean, if you own a business, you're the face of it.

Lori Osbourne:

You are the brand. And to me, it's your brand is what people

Lori Osbourne:

say about you when you're not in the room, good or bad, I love

Lori Osbourne:

that. To me, my brand revolves around authenticity and.

Lori Osbourne:

Integrity, and if I, if I'm doing what I'm supposed to be

Lori Osbourne:

doing, that is what people are going to pick up and what's

Lori Osbourne:

going to show up. And that's, that's a feeling, because people

Lori Osbourne:

buy from emotion and justify with logic. That's straight from

Lori Osbourne:

Simon Sinek. And start with your why. So, you know, when I

Lori Osbourne:

started learning about branding, I really thought it was just

Lori Osbourne:

colors and fonts, because as a web developer, that's where I

Lori Osbourne:

have to start, you know, I start with a logo, and I Okay, I'm

Lori Osbourne:

going to go from here and go colors and fonts. And that's,

Lori Osbourne:

you know, that's what matters. But it's, it's not just that

Lori Osbourne:

your brand is everything about you, how you come across, how

Lori Osbourne:

you speak, your tone of voice, and it's your ideal client,

Lori Osbourne:

because it's who you're speaking to and how you're speaking to

Lori Osbourne:

your ideal client. And the people that really don't

Lori Osbourne:

understand their brand or don't come across with a strong brand,

Lori Osbourne:

are the ones that are trying to sell to everyone, and when you

Lori Osbourne:

try to sell to everyone, you sell to no one. So part of what

Lori Osbourne:

I do when I'm helping people clarify their brand is we spent

Lori Osbourne:

a lot of time. He disappeared. Jennifer, I'm

Jennifer Takagi:

still here. I'm having my book when I

Lori Osbourne:

help people with their brand, we spend a lot of

Lori Osbourne:

time on really understanding who their ideal client is, and I

Lori Osbourne:

really push people to dig deep on this. Because again, if I

Lori Osbourne:

build a website that's trying to speak to everybody out there,

Lori Osbourne:

it's not going to be effective, because it's not going to speak

Lori Osbourne:

to speak to the people you really, really want to attract,

Lori Osbourne:

right?

Jennifer Takagi:

I love I'm still here. You just can't see

Jennifer Takagi:

me. Thank God. Most of this will be audio anyway, um, and I love

Jennifer Takagi:

that, and it's kind of like we hear, you know, friends of ours

Jennifer Takagi:

say, you know, I was born with an outside voice, not an inside

Jennifer Takagi:

voice. And that's probably me. Like, yeah, I've always been

Jennifer Takagi:

loud. I've never not been loud. Like, we can't, I can't be

Jennifer Takagi:

quiet. So that's kind of who I am. So, right, very interesting

Jennifer Takagi:

that you would say that, and that kind of goes along a little

Jennifer Takagi:

bit with the question I asked of, oh, look, I'm back. Um, like

Jennifer Takagi:

your brand is who you are when you're an entrepreneur and and I

Jennifer Takagi:

believe it evolves and it grows. And mine has evolved and grown.

Jennifer Takagi:

My company name has changed. My logo has changed. I've kept the

Jennifer Takagi:

basic brand colors of purple, teal and gold, because I like

Jennifer Takagi:

those colors, and it kind of has fit well. So yeah, that's really

Jennifer Takagi:

important on the website piece I think I was given. I'm going to

Jennifer Takagi:

go with not the greatest advice ever when I became an

Jennifer Takagi:

entrepreneur with you have to have a website like, let's start

Jennifer Takagi:

with the website when I really wasn't sure what I was going to

Jennifer Takagi:

offer, how it's going to show up, and it made it really

Jennifer Takagi:

difficult. And I think that's why 1000s of dollars were spent

Jennifer Takagi:

trying to create a website that did what I wanted it to do, and

Jennifer Takagi:

then highlighted me the way I wanted to. And I started my

Jennifer Takagi:

entrepreneurial career doing mostly leadership development

Jennifer Takagi:

training, which I still do, and speaking at conferences on

Jennifer Takagi:

leadership and that all like folds in together, but someone

Jennifer Takagi:

said, your website is for credibility. And my husband, one

Jennifer Takagi:

day said, how many hits you get on your website a day? And I was

Jennifer Takagi:

like, Gee, I don't even know. I don't know how to find that out,

Jennifer Takagi:

so I don't have a clue. And I said, I don't even know that

Jennifer Takagi:

anybody goes to my website. And I was speaking in a conference,

Jennifer Takagi:

and a gentleman started asking me questions. And I was like,

Jennifer Takagi:

how? How do you know these questions to ask me? And he

Jennifer Takagi:

goes, Oh, I found it all on your website. I just wanted to know

Jennifer Takagi:

more. And I was like, Oh my gosh, one person went to my

Jennifer Takagi:

website, but now I do get a little more traffic. Yeah, it

Jennifer Takagi:

becomes a lot. So if you were going to speak to a new

Jennifer Takagi:

entrepreneur, they're just trying to find their way and get

Jennifer Takagi:

started. Do you have any suggestions on, like, what they

Jennifer Takagi:

could look for or to do for a website or the purpose of it,

Jennifer Takagi:

because, again, I just thought mine was for credibility, like

Jennifer Takagi:

it's for credibility. You go on there and yeah, I have a

Jennifer Takagi:

website, I have a business, and you can contact me.

Lori Osbourne:

So I'm going to start there. Yes, I agree that

Lori Osbourne:

you have to have a website. Do. For that purpose, because when

Lori Osbourne:

someone is looking looking at you as a business, they they

Lori Osbourne:

need that. Need to Know You really are a business. You

Lori Osbourne:

really are. You so you are, but it's worthless if it doesn't, if

Lori Osbourne:

you don't know who you are, and you don't know who you're

Lori Osbourne:

selling to, and you don't know your own brand. So where I

Lori Osbourne:

suggest someone starts is at the very, very beginning, which is,

Lori Osbourne:

who am I? Who do I want to sell to? What problems am I going to

Lori Osbourne:

solve? Of theirs, and why? Why am I doing what I'm doing?

Lori Osbourne:

Because that's the start of the brand. And where I start with

Lori Osbourne:

people is I start with my authority blueprint, which is

Lori Osbourne:

exactly that we spend an hour and a half drilling down those

Lori Osbourne:

things and when they say, which I often hear, but I don't want

Lori Osbourne:

to niche down, because if I niche down, then all these other

Lori Osbourne:

people aren't going to know about me, and I'm not going to

Lori Osbourne:

attract all these other people. And I promise you, I am speaking

Lori Osbourne:

from experience. I've been doing this work for 10 years, and it

Lori Osbourne:

took me until two years ago to finally bite the bullet and go

Lori Osbourne:

think these people are onto something I probably need to

Lori Osbourne:

niche down. And what I realized that everyone had already taught

Lori Osbourne:

me but I ignored, is when you niche down, you attract those

Lori Osbourne:

people, you become the authority in that specific area to that

Lori Osbourne:

specific audience, which means you can charge more and you are

Lori Osbourne:

an expert in that area. Additionally, if you have

Lori Osbourne:

referral partners, you're still going to get other people that

Lori Osbourne:

may not be your niche audience. You know, for example, I work

Lori Osbourne:

very closely with our local chamber. I live in a very small

Lori Osbourne:

community. They refer me, anybody that walks in the

Lori Osbourne:

chamber and says anything about a website, and that may not be

Lori Osbourne:

thought leaders, which is who I primarily support. I just built

Lori Osbourne:

a website for a medical marijuana company that they're

Lori Osbourne:

doing concierge service, Doctor services come to your home to

Lori Osbourne:

get you your medical marijuana card. That's not necessarily a

Lori Osbourne:

thought leader, but it's a local person that found me through the

Lori Osbourne:

chamber that, of course, I'm not going to say no, I can't help

Lori Osbourne:

you, but your website needs to be very specific, and it needs

Lori Osbourne:

in like the above the fold, like in the first few seconds, needs

Lori Osbourne:

to be so clear that your ideal client goes, Oh my gosh. They

Lori Osbourne:

get it. They get me. They know what's wrong. They know my

Lori Osbourne:

problems, and they can solve them, and I like them. You know,

Lori Osbourne:

there's something that aligns. It's, it's your it's your why,

Lori Osbourne:

or your passion, or it's, you know, there's something that

Lori Osbourne:

connects, that's, that's the point. The point of the website

Lori Osbourne:

is to start the know, like and trust and start the

Lori Osbourne:

relationship, and then the rest of it is where we continue and

Lori Osbourne:

get to the sales the website is not actually to fill out a sales

Lori Osbourne:

form. Well,

Jennifer Takagi:

this the whole idea of know who you want to

Jennifer Takagi:

serve and get really specific on that. I have a friend, and I

Jennifer Takagi:

can't remember if this is just before the pandemic and the

Jennifer Takagi:

shutdown or in the early days of it, but she's a physical

Jennifer Takagi:

therapist, and she decided to niche into tennis elbow. And she

Jennifer Takagi:

is the tennis elbow expert, and she started doing physical

Jennifer Takagi:

therapy online with her patients, and she still does

Jennifer Takagi:

that like she is the tennis elbow queen. You can look her

Jennifer Takagi:

up, Emma green, she's in the LA area. I love it focus, but I'm

Jennifer Takagi:

really confident. If I went to her and say, hey, my knee hurts,

Jennifer Takagi:

she could tell me some things to do, right, to help with my knee,

Jennifer Takagi:

right? I had lunch with an amazing woman last night, Beth

Jennifer Takagi:

Davis. She is well known for human design that like, that's

Jennifer Takagi:

how I've heard of Beth, and she's in Oklahoma City now, so

Jennifer Takagi:

it was super cool that she's, like, actually here, and we went

Jennifer Takagi:

to lunch. But she knows someone who focuses completely on

Jennifer Takagi:

addressing thyroid issues in women. That's it, thyroid

Jennifer Takagi:

issues. And I will say we're going to have to have cocktails

Jennifer Takagi:

and talk about this in much more detail, but my problem has been

Jennifer Takagi:

niching down. Because, you know, I can help everybody, right? And

Jennifer Takagi:

I need to get that. I mean, you know what lights me up, what

Jennifer Takagi:

sets me on fire? Because that's who you want to work with, are

Jennifer Takagi:

the people that light you up and set you on fire. So I love that.

Jennifer Takagi:

So. At with, with for our audience. Do you have anything

Jennifer Takagi:

coming up? Any workshops, any freebies, anything like, to get

Jennifer Takagi:

them more connected with you. Lori, because, of course, I want

Jennifer Takagi:

to promote you as much as possible on this podcast. Also.

Lori Osbourne:

Thank you. Thank you. I don't have anything

Lori Osbourne:

coming up yet. I'm in the process of figuring some really

Lori Osbourne:

cool things out, but in the meantime, I will give you the

Lori Osbourne:

link to share. I have a self assessment that I encourage

Lori Osbourne:

everyone to take. It is five questions. It'll take you about

Lori Osbourne:

two minutes, and it's really to help you look at how your brand

Lori Osbourne:

is coming across in all areas, not just your website, but just

Lori Osbourne:

in general. And is it hurting you, or is it helping you? And

Lori Osbourne:

it's a total self assessment with a score at the end to just

Lori Osbourne:

get an idea of and you'll see, when you're going through it,

Lori Osbourne:

you'll go, oh, I Oh, maybe I should be doing that. Maybe I

Lori Osbourne:

should be doing that. And then sign up for a clarity. Call with

Lori Osbourne:

me. Let let me look at it. Let's talk about it. And I promise

Lori Osbourne:

you, I will give you at least three things you can do

Lori Osbourne:

immediately, and don't have to pay me a dime. And then if you

Lori Osbourne:

decide that you want me to help you, of course, I'm happy to do

Lori Osbourne:

that as well.

Jennifer Takagi:

I love it. So I'm going to I'm gonna say my my

Jennifer Takagi:

big takeaways from our time together is, if you're an

Jennifer Takagi:

entrepreneur, you are your brand. So I want to throw out

Jennifer Takagi:

there, you have to decide how you want to show up to the

Jennifer Takagi:

world. And side note, I went to school in Monterey, Mexico this

Jennifer Takagi:

summer, right after high school, like three weeks after I

Jennifer Takagi:

graduated, I went to school for the summer in Mexico to learn

Jennifer Takagi:

Spanish. Super awesome experience. But our leader said

Jennifer Takagi:

you might be the only American that that person you met has

Jennifer Takagi:

ever come across, and how you act, how you treat them, is

Jennifer Takagi:

going to be their impressions of the entire United States. So you

Jennifer Takagi:

have to decide, what do you want the whole country to appear

Jennifer Takagi:

others

Lori Osbourne:

with no pressure, no pressure. Just

Jennifer Takagi:

graduated high school, no pressure. But it

Jennifer Takagi:

didn't take a half a minute to see how some of the other

Jennifer Takagi:

college student, gals were acting on campus for me to go,

Jennifer Takagi:

Ooh, I don't want to be known as that girl. So your brand is kind

Jennifer Takagi:

of the same way somebody sees you and then and then, that's

Jennifer Takagi:

who you are. My other takeaway is, yes, your website is

Jennifer Takagi:

critical, but it needs to reflect you, who you want to

Jennifer Takagi:

serve, and what those problems are, and that you can address

Jennifer Takagi:

them. And probably one of the the biggest things is niche down

Jennifer Takagi:

as specifically and teeny tiny as you can possibly get, and

Jennifer Takagi:

everybody that needs you will find you absolutely,

Lori Osbourne:

absolutely, and when your brand is strong, you

Lori Osbourne:

will naturally attract the people that align with you. And

Lori Osbourne:

guess what, you won't attract everyone. I mean, I'm like, I'm

Lori Osbourne:

like, you Jennifer, I'm loud and proud, and not everybody likes

Lori Osbourne:

that. Not everybody likes my bright colors. You know, I've

Lori Osbourne:

actually had people tell me they don't like my bright colors.

Lori Osbourne:

Well, that's okay. You're not my ideal client. And guess what,

Lori Osbourne:

even though I'm colorful, that doesn't mean your website is

Lori Osbourne:

going to look like my website, your website's going to look

Lori Osbourne:

like your website should look so, yeah, attract those that are

Lori Osbourne:

going to love you and run with it.

Jennifer Takagi:

I taught a class for the great state of

Jennifer Takagi:

Oklahoma, and it was a two day class of stepping into your

Jennifer Takagi:

supervisory position. And I got there the second morning, and

Jennifer Takagi:

it's hard to do day two of standing all day, when you're

Jennifer Takagi:

used to sitting behind a camera on your butt all day, like and I

Jennifer Takagi:

go, I mean, you know, you bring your own energy, right? You're

Jennifer Takagi:

your own energy source. And I walked in, I was like, Good

Jennifer Takagi:

morning. Are we ready? And this one woman looked at me, and she

Jennifer Takagi:

is, you're just too perky for me. And I'm like, Great, I'll

Jennifer Takagi:

take it. I don't think that was the reaction that she expected,

Jennifer Takagi:

but, yeah, I'm not everybody's cup of tea. I don't know why,

Jennifer Takagi:

but I mean, that is the reality, and you know, we're going to

Jennifer Takagi:

attract the people that we want to work with and need to work

Jennifer Takagi:

with. So thank you for sharing. I'm so excited to have gotten

Jennifer Takagi:

this time. By the way, Lori and I weren't supposed to play

Jennifer Takagi:

together today, but it worked out perfectly that we

Lori Osbourne:

apparently we were supposed to play together

Lori Osbourne:

today, right? Someone else had something in mind for us, which

Lori Osbourne:

I love. And by the way, I know we only have a minute left, but

Lori Osbourne:

I grew up in Norman, Oklahoma.

Jennifer Takagi:

There you go. I went to the University, the

Jennifer Takagi:

University of University of Oklahoma. Boomer Sooner. I had a

Jennifer Takagi:

Boomer Sooner, baby. We're gonna have a good season this year.

Jennifer Takagi:

Okay, thank you for being here. I truly appreciate it. And. It.

Jennifer Takagi:

Final thoughts for the audience,

Lori Osbourne:

take the time to find your passion and your

Lori Osbourne:

purpose. Don't keep doing what you hate. If you hate it, just

Lori Osbourne:

take the time. Don't wait for a brain tumor. Go find your

Lori Osbourne:

purpose and passion, because it literally is life changing when

Lori Osbourne:

you live in your passion.

Jennifer Takagi:

I'm Jennifer Takagi with destin for success,

Jennifer Takagi:

and I look forward to connecting with you soon. Bye.
